On completion of the subject, the student will be able to:

  • Critically analyse human resources management of his/her department/organization based on the acquired deeper knowledge about concepts, principles and opportunities of contemporary management of human resources; (incl. principles, mechanisms and processes of quality management).
  • Critically discuss about labour law regarding employment relationships as an employer as well as an employee.
  • Provide solutions for problems regarding human resources management following the principles of professional ethics and the acquired deeper knowledge.

Introduction to Radiotherapy and the Principles and Practice of Pretreatment Procedures

This course will provide the student with the knowledge necessary to interact effectively with the members of the radiotherapy team and with the patients who are undergoing preparation for radiotherapy.  It will build on the knowledge gained in the courses from the first semester and how this knowledge is applied in a practical clinical setting. 

The course will provide the student knowledge and skills to accurately and safely prepare a patient for radiotherapy taking into account radiotherapy technical considerations and the patient condition.  The student will be able to select the appropriate imaging modality and imaging parameters to enable optimum treatment planning and will be able to evaluate the image

On successful completion of the subject the trainee will:

  • Discuss the principles of reproducibility, positioning and immobilisation.
  • Recognise the importance of accuracy in treatment preparation, delivery and documentation.
  • Discuss the radiotherapy management of the most common cancers treated in student`s home country, (eg. Breast, Prostate, Head and Neck, Lung, Colorectal, Cervix, Central Nervous System).
  • Be able to interpret a treatment prescription in order to accurately prepare a patient for treatment.
  • Define the imaging methods and parameters for simulation.
  • Assess the patient for any co-morbidities and explain the procedure.
  • Determine the optimum treatment position and immobilisation method for an individual patient and carry out the simulation procedure.
  • Check the acquired images to ensure the information is sufficient for planning purposes.
  • Prepare the necessary documentation to enable accurate reproducibility on the treatment unit.

Introduction to Radiotherapy Treatment Planning

This course will provide the student with the knowledge and skills with respect to radiation beam characteristics and dose limitations to the main organs at risk in the body.  They will be able to evaluate fused images from different diagnostic modalities and the reason for their selection.

This course will provide the student with the ability to discuss the choice of the radiation beams used in radiotherapy and how the dose distribution is achieved and/or modified.  They will be able to prepare a simple 2D treatment plan and to evaluate more complex treatment plans.  They will be able to discuss the differences in 2D, 3D and IMRT approaches.

On successful completion of the subject the trainee will:

  • Explain the definitions used in treatment planning.
  • Explain concepts relevant to treatment planning.
  • Describe beam characteristics.
  • Compare beam data in different situations.
  • Evaluate imaging modalities commonly used in image acquisition for planning and the reasons for their selection.
  • Define the principles of image fusion.
  • Appreciate dose constraints and how they are applied.
  • Describe how beam characteristics are selected to achieve optimum dose distribution.
  • Interpret and evaluate the treatment plan and compare it to the treatment prescription.
